Reliance.


The very fact of our humanity means that we are interdependent on one another. We have built up structures of society and become very reliant on one another. Society brings its positives and its negatives.  We have to pay taxes and labour to earn a living. Some will complain about this, feeling that the government takes no account of people, while making sure they look after themselves. Others might feel a sense of anger that not everybody pulls their weight.

From time to time a feeling of unrest boils to the surface and people complain and yet feel helpless. Fingers will be pointed this way and that seeking to find a scapegoat, somebody to blame.

It is good that we have, over the years, developed a system of society. If it functions well those who have difficulties will be assisted to reach a full and meaningful life where they feel of value and can make a contribution. There are those who without such help would fall into despair.

It is in the midst of all of this that the creative person has much of value to offer. They can bring to society music, film and art, books and verse all of which can enhance the very quality of life.

They can also teach something else possibly of even deeper value.  

The creative person, more than most, are aware of self-reliance. Surrounded by all sorts of aids, hardly a day goes past without there being something else that will help the creative process. Drawing aids, computer programmes to help in composition, and many more. With all of this the creative person knows that in the end, the only reliance they have is themselves. When it comes to crunch time they are on their own, they alone know what it is they wish to give to society. 

Would society not be a much better functioning organisation if each and every member found their own little bit of self-reliance? There is much to be gained from working together and being in harmony but for each, it should not be forgotten the value of some time for personal growth.  A time to be at one with the inner being.

Solitude.

42 Solitude. "The sage takes such things and makes the most of it. Embracing his solitude." I could have made those two sentences into one by adding the little word, by. Lao Tzu on more than one occasion speaks of times of solitude, here he goes a stage further and says he embraces it as if it was a dear and precious friend. The creative person will be familiar with the thought of embracing solitude. Most creative things are accomplished after and during times of working alone. Some may find it helpful to be part of a group, working together and sharing the experience, but even those moments are just an interlude to the many hours closed away in the studio or at the workbench. Yin - Yang.

28 Yin - Yang To be truly creative the artist of either painting, music, sculpting or composing must know the strength of the male and grasp firmly to the sensitivity of the female. To know and to sense both the Yin and the Yang. It is in knowing and sensing this marvellous harmony of the universe that the creative person finds the joy of the Tao as the creative process flows and streams. Lao Tzu says when we grasp both the Yin and the Yang we become again like a child. In this state of being, we can create with real freedom. He goes on to speak of the uncarved block of wood.
