Perseverance.


Tao is seen as a wonderful treasure for all both good and bad. It makes no distinction it continues to persevere and support us at all times. We might achieve a feeling of being somebody when another offers us some flattery for what we have created. Such flattery is temporal and fleeting. if we rely on the flattery of others, we will not have what it takes to see us through the down times, the blank moments that all creative people have.

At such times, and every artist in all fields have them, the creative has to reach to the inner strength to provide the perseverance it, takes to prepare and to carry on. If we learn of Tao and make a daily effort to live in it we will never feel alone or bereft. Flattery and gifts can only bring temporary peace, Tao offers far more. It brings tenacity and strength, giving the power to hang in there in those dark times, assured that this too shall pass. 

The creative person can offer to others their learning and knowledge, they can point to ways to get back onto the road of their creativity. But the greatest gift we can ever give to another is the Tao and how to live in its way. Doing such, those dark places and sightless times will become less and less and even when they do come, they will hold no fear. 

This is why Tao is the greatest of treasures.

Solitude.

42 Solitude. "The sage takes such things and makes the most of it. Embracing his solitude." I could have made those two sentences into one by adding the little word, by. Lao Tzu on more than one occasion speaks of times of solitude, here he goes a stage further and says he embraces it as if it was a dear and precious friend. The creative person will be familiar with the thought of embracing solitude. Most creative things are accomplished after and during times of working alone. Some may find it helpful to be part of a group, working together and sharing the experience, but even those moments are just an interlude to the many hours closed away in the studio or at the workbench. Yin - Yang.

28 Yin - Yang To be truly creative the artist of either painting, music, sculpting or composing must know the strength of the male and grasp firmly to the sensitivity of the female. To know and to sense both the Yin and the Yang. It is in knowing and sensing this marvellous harmony of the universe that the creative person finds the joy of the Tao as the creative process flows and streams. Lao Tzu says when we grasp both the Yin and the Yang we become again like a child. In this state of being, we can create with real freedom. He goes on to speak of the uncarved block of wood.
