Opportunities


We stand before a blank canvas and so often the mind becomes equally as blank. Yet here before us is a world of opportunities. Anything can happen. The possibilities of what this blank canvas becomes are endless. Like every other artist, the ideas and notions of what we wish to fill this canvas are uncountable.

No matter how many canvases we paint there can still be more we only have to open our minds and feel free to let the creative spirit work.

The great masterpieces of art all began with such a blank canvas or sheet of paper. Those many thousands of works of art are all possible because people followed the urge and inspiration that allowed them to be creative. If they spent too much time thinking it through, the rational mind often tells them that it is not possible that it is a waste of time and they were fooling themselves if they believed that a masterpiece lived within them waiting to be free.

Lao Tzu tells us that we are like empty containers that can never be emptied and can never be filled. That we must free ourselves of negative thoughts and go with the flow. The more we create the more possibilities there are.

The only things that can stop us are negative thoughts and negative thinking. We are like wells that keep filling the more we allow the world around us to speak to our deepest inner beings the more possibilities we have to fill the world with art that speaks to the inner beings of others bringing joy and pleasure.

Solitude.

42 Solitude. "The sage takes such things and makes the most of it. Embracing his solitude." I could have made those two sentences into one by adding the little word, by. Lao Tzu on more than one occasion speaks of times of solitude, here he goes a stage further and says he embraces it as if it was a dear and precious friend. The creative person will be familiar with the thought of embracing solitude. Most creative things are accomplished after and during times of working alone. Some may find it helpful to be part of a group, working together and sharing the experience, but even those moments are just an interlude to the many hours closed away in the studio or at the workbench. Yin - Yang.

28 Yin - Yang To be truly creative the artist of either painting, music, sculpting or composing must know the strength of the male and grasp firmly to the sensitivity of the female. To know and to sense both the Yin and the Yang. It is in knowing and sensing this marvellous harmony of the universe that the creative person finds the joy of the Tao as the creative process flows and streams. Lao Tzu says when we grasp both the Yin and the Yang we become again like a child. In this state of being, we can create with real freedom. He goes on to speak of the uncarved block of wood.
